Hi! I'm Erik.

A Little About Me

I am a web developer living in Philadelphia and currently working for Practice

My Skills

HTML/CSS 73%
Ruby/Rails 85%
JavaScript 65%
ReactJS/Redux 55%
Ninja 100%

More About Me?

Before being a web developer, I was originally a martial arts instructor. So in a way, I really am a ninja and a strive to be a development-ninja as well.

What I Love

Building APIs in Ruby/Rails. I love thinking outside of the box and learning new things. I love reading, spending time with my wife, my two dachshunds, and going to Costco (no, really).

Work Ethic

I have the drive to constantly improve myself. Whether it is through my work or my personal life, I try to learn or accomplish something new each day. I eagerly look forward to challenge as it is another opportunity for growth.

Fun Facts

I've jumped out of airplanes. I've been a national martial arts champion. I like to surf, climb stuff, & enjoy a good craft beer.

Experience

My Experience

Prior to graduating from The Iron Yard - Orlando last August, I was teaching myself how to code for the better part of 2 years. I decided that I wanted to jump into the development world and thought that a bootcamp would be the best experience for me.

Since graduating from The Iron Yard, I have branched out and done some consulting work on my own, as well as with CMBR Creative. I most recently have been working with Practice. Feel free to check below on some of the projects I've done as well as my experience with different technologies.

Expanding Your Horizons

"Today I Learned" is inspired by Reddit's Today I Learned and is just a collection of things I find fascinating

Before I became a web dev, I was a history major at The University of Delaware. History and learning are still two of my passions and here you can find my short musings, fun facts, or links to full blog posts.

9/30/2016

Today I learned that there are over 2000 outdoor murals in the city of Philadelphia, making it the mural capital of the U.S.

9/22/2016

Today I learned that I should have bought BitCoin back in 2011, when it was only $1.00 per coin. Now it's worth ~$640/coin.

9/13/2016

Today I learned that one-third of humanity live in such light polluted areas that the Milky Way is not visible to the human eye. This includes roughly 80% of North Americans. Makes me want to visit somewhere to see it!

Project Overview

The Community Health Impact Council (CHIC) project connects community-driven individuals and groups with the Florida Hospital. The Council would provide funding and oversight to these groups and the project would allow Users to set goals and budgets as needed.

Project Details

As a contractor for CMBR Creative I was a back-end developer on this project. I was involved in creating a Rails-API that was consumed by an Angular front-end. It was my job to ensure that the proper endpoints were completed and returning data in the correct form. I also was involved in areas such as: automated emails, user authentication/authorization, and scheduled tasks.

Project Overview

Practice is an interactive video learning platform and is used to help develop skills that require practice to learn and demonstration to assess.

Project Details

At Practice (formerly Apprennet), I am responsible for maintaining version 1 of the application as well helping to architect version 2. Version 1 is a legacy Rails 3 application with a smattering of BackboneJS and jQuery/Rails templates on the front end. In version 2, we implemented a Rails 5 API on the back-end with React and Redux on the front-end.

Technology Overview

Here you can see a list of the RubyGems, libraries, or other technologies that I am comfortable working with or have worked with in the past.
